What an exciting time to be in Rocky River!

New residential construction of all types, new retail shops and restaurants, new recreation facilities and a new park are all here, yet we still share the feeling of being part of an established community.

We continue to prosper as a city because you are involved in all aspects of it - schools, sports, seniors, local government and churches.

As former Mayor Don Umerley loved to say: "Rocky River remains a great place to live, to own a home, to raise a family, to educate your children, to own a business... and even if you're just visiting, it's a great place to pass through."

Seven Hills is a city in central Cuyahoga County 13 miles south of Cleveland, bounded by Brooklyn Heights on the north, Independence on the east, Broadview Heights on the south, and Parma on the west. It occupies 4.86 square miles. Seven Hills was originally part of Independence Township. Its early history was closely tied to the development of 2 neighboring communities, Independence and Brooklyn. Independence was known early for its orchards, vineyards, and stone quarries. The "stone business" was prominent in the area before the Civil War. Later, large areas of land were cleared and used for farming. In 1914, the eastern portion of Independence Township was incorporated as the village of Independence. In 1927, the remainder of the township became the village of Seven Hills and began operating under the mayor-council type of government.

The hilly terrain and natural setting probably gave rise to the name, but the early residents may also have referred to the 7 hills of Rome. Through the years, Seven Hills has remained primarily a residential community. Because of early suburban development, only 12 farms remained by 1938. The population grew from 333 in 1938 to 555 in 1940, 1,350 in 1950, 5,708 in 1960, 12,700 in 1970, and over 16,000 in 1980. Seven Hills became a city in 1961. Westlake's favorable location drew its first settlers almost 200 years ago. Today that location ? a 15-minute commute from Clevelands downtown, five miles from Hopkins International Airport, and 10 minutes from the Ohio Turnpike ? continues to be a magnet for new residents and businesses.

A suburb of Cleveland on the western perimeter of Cuyahoga County, Westlake is primarily a residential community. The city also includes a significant number of corporate facilities, office parks, hotels and other industrial and commercial development.

The population recorded in the 2000 census of nearly 32,000 represents about 75 percent of the developed residentially zoned land. Projections are that when all residential areas are developed, the citys population will increase to about 40,000.

Westlake, designated a "Tree City USA" since 1991, retains a feeling of openness and hints of its agricultural past in an occasional vineyard or century farmhouse. The 1998 opening of a premier recreation center surrounded by 85 acres of parkland reflects the emphasis on public land. The citys other parks include Clague Park, Bradley Road Nature Park, Ranney Park and the Metro Parks Bradley Road Reservation.

The citys newest development ? Crocker Park ? creates a mixed-use town center with high-end retailers, major restaurants, offices and residential dwellings in a pedestrian-friendly environment.

In addition to Westlakes outstanding recreation areas and fine schools, the citys churches, cultural assets, medical facilities and businesses have drawn residents with a wealth of talents. The city is enriched by their willingness to participate alongside descendants of early families in civic activities.  (more on Westlake...)
